The Little Mermaid
I'm taking the story of "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Anderson and illustrating 5 scenes from it to add to my portfolio. Here is the first!

East of the Sun and West of the Moon
This is an illustration based on the story, "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" in my vision. It is a Norwegian folk tale.
I kept the color palette restricted to blues. I find I rely on the color purple way too much in illustrations so I had to hold back on this. As always I manage to get in a strong light source so the candlelight was fun to experiment with. I wanted to play with warm and cool colors with this story in particular since the two live in a cold ice castle and become fond of each other throughout their stay. The tapestry on the wall reflects some key elements in the story, as does the giant silver crown on the bedpost.
It has been around a year since I've last done a fairy tale illustration. Fitting enough this story deals with a year as well. I've been craving to do another and finally found the time for this. I'm planning my next one now!

Howl and Sophie
A quick warm down sketch for the night of Howl and Sophie from Howl’s
Moving Castle. Pretty much did it for my friend who loves this movie.

Sisters
An illustration based on my sister Sadie and I when we were kids. We'd play with Barbies and My Little Pony's all the time.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice
This is an illustration based on the poem "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" in my vision.
I wanted to bring to life the brooms with something more than just animation so I added the light effect with the swirls to bring more magic to the scene.
The color palette is mostly muted except for the brooms which hold contrasting colors to create more separation from the depicted world shown.

Mirror Mirror
This is another illustration from my series entitled "Investigation of a
Fairy Tale". It's a retelling of Snow White as a murder set in the
Victorian Era. An unknown woman was found dead on the cobblestone street
with what appears to be an apple in her outstretched hand.
I wanted to do my interpretation of the old school fairy tale painting techniques.

The Little Mermaid Tutorial
Click Images for a larger view.
I came across the old folder of my Little Mermaid Illustration and noticed I saved iterations of my steps. This means I can do a tutorial. Yay!
It's rare I'll document my progress in my illustrations because I'm extremely lazy to take 2 seconds to save out images.
I tried to cover exactly what I did on this piece and my normal tendencies for Illustrations.
I hope this explains it well.
Also here is a list of the major brushes I use in my art (mostly Illustrations). These are Painter specific brushes (not Photoshop).
I'm pretty basic when it comes to painting. I haven't used any photo texture specific stuff yet. I have used an overall canvas texture to complete a few pieces, but apart from that I wield the normal painter brush for majority of things.
I work in Photoshop or Painter or both. I draw everything by hand traditionally and scan into the programs to work from there. The brushes are the best things I've come across! I urge you to try/implement these awesome gems!
If you have any further questions or need clarification please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks!

Silent Hill: Book of Memories
A game I worked on is finally released! I was an animator on Konami's Silent Hill: Book of Memories. It was great working on something so incredibly dark (darker than anything I've done before). I had the fortune of animating many of the famous characters and some new faces (my favorite character is the tree boss). This game is a bit different from the usual Silent Hill games going into a bit of fantasy. Pick up your copy today!

A Grimm Meeting
This was an old sketch I had done a long time ago and I had always wanted to color it. It may be one of the only illustrations I have placed myself in. I'm obsessed with the Brothers Grimm so this piece is a child of that obsession. Who wouldn't want to meet the brothers if given the chance?!

The Nutcracker
This is a scene from the story of The Nutcracker where Clara wakes to find the rats attacking her Nutcracker who has come to life.
This painting came together rather quickly. It was fun working with the different textures and color for this piece (you know me I love my bright saturated colors). Clara herself was a joy to work on. I went for a more 3D look for her when rendering.
